Steven Woolfe: EU Should Not Have the Power to Wage War

Steven Woolfe MEP, UK Independence Party, explains why he voted no on EU policy initiatives to establish and finance EU army. “And they also voted for the ability for EU to initiate its own drone killings. Today, this chamber has turned EU into a dark and dangerous place. And that is why I voted against it, because I do not believe that EU should have the power to wage war on other countries.” European Parliament, Strasbourg, 21 May 2015. Speaker:

Mr. Woolfe please, one minute.

Steven Woolfe:

Thank you madam Deputy Speaker. Almost a year ago I was in this chamber for the first time as a new MEP, when I heard members demanding sanctions on Russia, and even some members declaring that they should have war from the EU on Russia. I was told: “Don't worry, the Eu does not have these desires and does not have an EU army.” But under the guise of this policy of implementing a common security defense policy, today, this chamber voted on financing for an EU army. They voted on financing EU military research. They voted on tax incentives for companies providing finance and support from an EU defense. And they also voted for the ability for EU to initiate its own drone killings. Today, this chamber has turned EU into a dark and dangerous place. And that is why I voted against it, because I do not believe that EU should have the power to wage war on other countries.
